Earth-Friendly Products from Hallmark

Facts
Hallmark began recycling paper in the 1940s.
The company first introduced recycled paper into select greeting card lines and packaging in the 1970s.
Hallmark established corporate-wide energy conservation and waste reduction programs in the 1990s.
Hallmark intends to obtain 50 percent of the paper it buys for greeting cards from recycled stock and 100 percent of the paper it buys for products from sustainable sources.
In 2008, Hallmark developed a “green” icon with four arrows revolving around the Hallmark crown. The arrows represent the four areas of Hallmark’s environmental efforts – water, waste, paper and energy.
In mid-2008, the Hallmark “green” icon started appearing on greeting cards and other product lines. Products made with paper from sustainably managed forests, recycled paper content, or other eco-friendly materials will bear this special icon, along with relevant labeling.

Product News

2009 Everyday Greeting Cards

  • Most Hallmark greeting cards are printed on paper from sustainably managed forests.
  • Hallmark's 99-cent cards, humor cards lines Shoebox and Saturdays, and part of the Hallmark PRODUCT (RED)™ line, are printed on recycled paper with a minimum 20 percent recycled fiber.
  • An earth-friendly line of 99 cards available during summer 2009 uses 100 percent post-consumer waste recycled paper. No new trees were used to make these cards, and they are made from recycled materials that have been diverted from landfills.

2009 Hallmark Christmas Cards

  • Paper for all Hallmark individual and boxed Christmas cards is sourced from sustainably managed forests.
  • The entire Shoebox holiday card line uses recycled paper.
  • Hallmark's 2009 Christmas boxed-card line reduced the size of packaging to feature only the front of the card, rather than a larger box that features both the card front as well as the entire envelope with an open flap, reducing packaging materials by about one-third.
  • New Self-Mailer cards feature 10 postal-ready cards that can be folded and mailed without the need for an envelope.

Other Initiatives

  • Gift presentation:  90 percent of Hallmark roll wrap and all Hallmark tissue paper are printed on paper from sustainably managed forests. The cores of each wrapping paper roll are made of 100 percent recycled fiber. In addition, gift bags are an environmentally friendly choice to present gifts since most consumers reuse the bags.
  • Party products:  The bases of Party Express From Hallmark paper plates are made of 100 percent recycled paper. The plate designs are printed on paper stock from sustainably managed forests and then laminated to the recycled base. The net recycled content for the plates is 85 percent. Party Express From Hallmark napkins contain 30 percent recycled fiber, and cups are made with paper from sustainably managed forests.
  • Hallmark-branded merchandise bags: Beginning summer 2008, all paper merchandise bags Hallmark produces for mass-channel retailers are made with 100 percent recycled brown Kraft paper. Bags for Hallmark Gold Crown stores are produced on bleach Kraft paper with 40 percent recycled content.
