Hallmark Mahogany and Jill Scott’s Blues Babe Foundation Announce National Scholarship Winners
Scholarships awarded to two college students pursuing a career in the writing arts
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (February 22, 2016) — Hallmark's Mahogany brand and partner Blues Babe, a registered 501(c)3 foundation spearheaded by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Jill Scott, are proud to announce the winners of the national, merit-based scholarship announced this past June for college students interested in pursuing a career in the writing arts.
Winners as selected by representatives from Mahogany are:
- John Knight - Broken Arrow, Okla.
Columbia College Chicago, Chicago, Ill.
- Kathleen Stoughton - Bargersville, Ind.
Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Ind.
Each will each receive a $10,000 scholarship and also will be invited to Hallmark's headquarters in Kansas City, Mo. for a workshop with Mahogany's team of writers during the summer of 2016. This personalized workshop will help students hone their craft over a three-day period and fully immerse them in the day-to-day experience of a Mahogany writer.
"The Mahogany team is excited to welcome John and Kathleen this summer," said Monic Houpe, Mahogany brand manager. "We were energized by the abundance of qualified applicants and reviewed each entry looking for writing that hit just the right mix of personal experience and self-expression."
This scholarship unites Mahogany's commitment to a genuine, progressive and optimistic personal connection with the Blues Babe Foundation's extensive work supporting students pursuing a college education.
Mahogany and the Blues Babe Foundation also teamed up to promote the importance of education and creative writing skills during sessions at last year's Camp Jill Scott, an annual summer enrichment camp for under-served middle school students in the North Philadelphia area.
